What it builds

Core skills

Dodgeball develops throwing accuracy and catching ability alongside sharp agility and interception skills. Every point demands quick thinking and fast reactions. Young people learn to stay on their toes, read the game and support their teammates. It's fast, competitive and one of the best sessions for building communication and trust within a group.

First 15 minutes

Our warm-up circuit

Small groups rotate through five stations, about three minutes each, to get moving and build the throwing, catching and blocking skills they'll use in the games that follow.

Diagram of the five-station dodgeball warm-up circuit

Station 1

Sprints

Sprint between two points, reaching down to touch the floor at the far end before jogging back and going again.

Station 2

Block in the Middle

The player in the centre of the circle tries to block throws coming from the outside. Swap in a new player once someone's hit on the legs.

Station 3

Target Throw

Throw at a target, a tall cone works well, moving it back after every hit to raise the difficulty.

Station 4

Catch & Pass

Partners pass a ball back and forth, picking up the speed of the throw as catching improves.

Station 5

Rest Stop

A breather with a drink and a seat before rotating back to the first station.

After the warm-up

Match play

Once the warm-up circuit is done, we move straight into games of dodgeball. Depending on the size of the group, younger members play six 2-minute games, while older members play with a running clock of 7-minute halves and 2-minute games, giving everyone plenty of time on court.
