Session // Evidence-Based Youth Development

Programme
Overview

Our comprehensive approach to youth development focuses on prevention, intervention, and building positive futures in Newham.

Purpose
& Approach

Evidence-based interventions designed to address root causes and build protective factors for lasting change.

Access to sport, arts and cultural activity is a fundamental human right — essential to every young person's mental, physical and emotional health.

When this right is denied, disadvantage and disaffection can lead to antisocial behaviour, gang related activity and in some cases extremism — impacting not only the young person, but their victims, families, friends, communities, and society as a whole.

Reduce Violence & Crime

// Prevention First

Providing positive alternatives during high-risk evening hours to keep young people safe and engaged.

16% of Newham's young people report concerns about personal safety, with 9% citing knife crime as a top concern. The council's Youth Safety Board uses a whole-system approach to tackle violence and anti-social behaviour.

Build Resilience

// Inner Strength

Developing emotional strength and self-belief through supportive activities and mentorship.

Mental health, trauma and abuse are growing concerns across Newham's young people, with many lacking access to adequate community-based support.

25+ Youth

Support NEET Youth

// Future Pathways

Helping young people not in education, employment or training develop career pathways.

26% of young people report anxiety over the cost of living, 19% worry about finding work, and 5% struggle to access apprenticeships.

Early Intervention

// Proactive Support

Identifying and addressing challenges before they escalate into serious issues.

Poor-quality temporary accommodation and high exploitation risk led to the creation of Newham's Youth Empowerment Service (YES) for young people aged 10–25.

50+ Families

Strengthen Connections

// Building Bridges

Creating strong bonds between young people, families and support services.

Newham Council partners include the Exit Foundation for gang involvement, Newham Rise for drug & alcohol support, and local Youth Zones.
